Snowstorm
More actions
The Snowstorm is the central environmental threat in Whiteout Survival. It represents the catastrophic climate disaster that destroyed civilization and continues to threaten survivors. In gameplay terms, the Snowstorm is the primary motivation for maintaining and upgrading the Furnace.
Overview
The world of Whiteout Survival is gripped by a perpetual, deadly Snowstorm that blankets the land in extreme cold. Survival depends on keeping the Furnace burning to generate enough heat to protect your city and its people. If the Furnace loses heat — whether because it runs out of Coal or falls below required power — the Snowstorm threatens to devastate your city.
Gameplay Mechanics
Heat Level
Your city maintains a Heat Level determined by your Furnace's current output. This heat protects inhabitants from the cold. If the Heat Level drops:
- Troops stationed in the city may begin to take casualties from cold exposure
- Production slows or halts
- City operations are impaired
Snowstorm Phases
The Snowstorm operates in cycles. During calm periods, the Furnace operates normally. During intensifying Snowstorm phases, the heat requirement increases, demanding more Coal consumption to maintain safe temperatures.
Critical Failure
If the Furnace completely runs out of fuel (Coal) and shuts down:
- The city loses all heat protection
- Troop losses begin to accumulate rapidly from cold exposure
- Buildings may take damage
- Recovery requires immediately resupplying Coal and restarting the Furnace
Protecting Against the Snowstorm
The core gameplay loop revolves around protecting your city from the Snowstorm:
- **Upgrade the Furnace** — Higher Furnace levels generate more heat and provide better protection
- **Maintain Coal supplies** — Never allow the Furnace to run out of fuel
- **Upgrade Coal production** — Improve Coal Output to sustain growing heat demands
- **Gather Coal actively** — Coal Mining on the world map supplements production
- **Research heat technologies** — Some research technologies improve Furnace efficiency and reduce Coal consumption
Lore Significance
The Snowstorm is the central event of Whiteout Survival's lore. Known as "The Great Freeze," it was a sudden, catastrophic climate event that plunged the world into an endless winter. Civilization collapsed, survivors banded together around heat sources, and the struggle for warmth became the defining challenge of the new world. See Lore for the full backstory.
Tips
- Never let Coal run out: This is the single most important rule in Whiteout Survival — keep your Coal stockpile healthy at all times.
- Maintain a 24-hour Coal buffer: Always have enough Coal stored to run the Furnace for at least 24 hours without additional gathering.
- Upgrade Coal production buildings early: Early investment in Coal Mines prevents crises later.
- Research Coal efficiency: Some Economy and Growth research technologies reduce the Furnace's Coal consumption or increase production.
- Watch the heat meter: The game provides visual warnings when heat is dropping — respond immediately.
