Skins are the cosmetic items of Whiteout Survival — the look of a city, of a march, of a Chief's portrait. They turn up as rewards across a dozen events, and Frostfire Mine notes that skin bonuses apply inside the mine, because four of the five families carry a small permanent bonus. Only one is purely decorative.
The five families
| Family | Usual bonus | How many follow it |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar Frame | Troops Defense +2% | 49 / 67 |
| March Skin | Hunting March Speed +5% | 42 / 47 |
| City Skin | Troops Attack +2% | 19 / 23 |
| Teleport Skin | Troops Lethality +2% | 4 / 5 |
| Nameplate | none | 16 / 16 |
A Nameplate is the one that changes nothing but the look. Every other family adds a standing bonus for as long as the cosmetic is equipped.
The exceptions
The rule above is not universal, and the exceptions are worth knowing:
- Blazing Meteor, Blazing Meteor II and Frost Dragon give 10% Hunting March Speed instead of 5%.
- The Frostwing Avatar Frame gives 3% Troops Defense, and the Master Builder frame gives 1% Construction Speed rather than defence at all.
- Dragonhold gives 5% Troops Attack, and Winter of Plenty gives 5% Resource Gathering Speed instead.
- A handful of the earliest avatar frames, and one teleport skin, are listed as flat +1 and +2 rather than as percentages.
Where they come from
- Seasonal and limited events — most city and march skins come from an event shop or a milestone track.
- The Prestige Shop, at VIP level 12, holds permanent skins claimed with 100 puzzle pieces.
- The President of a state receives two of their own, granted for 14 days.
- State vs State winners can buy one in the event shop, granted for 7 days.
Some prestige city skins carry a Domain Effect as well, which extends a bonus to allied cities standing nearby.
The Domain Effect
A few prestige city skins are Domains: besides their own bonus, they project one onto the allied cities standing around them. Three rules govern them:
- a Chief's city must stand within the Domain's reach to receive anything;
- where several Domains of the same type reach the same city, the higher level wins;
- where two of the same type and level reach it, one of them applies at random.
The Frost Sphere, the Domain of the Prestige Merit Shop, shows the shape of the thing. Its six levels raise its owner's Troops Attack from 5% to 50%, and widen its reach from 2 tiles to 6:
| Level | Troops Attack | Reach | Cities covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | +5% | 2 | 8 |
| II | +10% | 2 | 8 |
| III | +20% | 4 | 24 |
| IV | +30% | 4 | 24 |
| V | +40% | 4 | 24 |
| VI | +50% | 6 | 48 |
The two series match: 8, 24 and 48 are exactly the cities of a square ring one, two and three deep, and the reaches of 2, 4 and 6 tiles are their doubles. At its sixth level, the Frost Sphere gives every ally inside it 30% Defender Troops Attack and Defense when defending their own city, 15% Training Speed and 30% Resource Gathering Speed.
