The Snowstorm is the central environmental threat and setting of Whiteout Survival. Known in the lore as the Great Freeze, it is the catastrophic climate disaster that plunged the world into an endless winter and destroyed civilization. In gameplay it is the thematic reason for building and upgrading the Furnace, whose warmth keeps your survivors alive.
The Furnace and Warmth
The Furnace at the heart of your city generates the heat that protects your survivors from the extreme cold. A higher-level Furnace produces more warmth, which helps keep survivors healthy and prevents them from becoming sick — its heat comes from the building's level, not from ongoing fuel. Keeping the Furnace upgraded is central to a thriving city, and any survivors who do fall ill can be treated at the Clinic.
In gameplay
Beyond the setting, the snowstorm is a mechanic. Storms sweep the world map periodically, and warmth is the city's answer to them: it comes from the Furnace's level, not from any fuel that has to be fed, so a city that keeps its Furnace climbing stays warm without further attention.
What warmth buys is health. Survivors left in the cold fall sick and stop working until they recover at the Clinic — and cold is only one of the two causes: the Cookhouse governs the other, since a meal of too low a quality drains mood as surely as the frost does.
The storms also touch other parts of the game. Peace Shield lists them among the things that shelter a city for a time, and Snowbuster turns the storm into an opponent outright: there, snowstorm damage is something the Portable Snowshield blocks, three bouts at a time.
Lore Significance
The Snowstorm — the Great Freeze — is the defining event of Whiteout Survival's lore: a sudden, catastrophic climate event that plunged the world into endless winter. Civilization collapsed, survivors banded together around heat sources, and the struggle for warmth became the central challenge of the new world. See Lore for the full backstory.
