Lore
"For the glory of the empire! For old Solaris!" Gregory still cries, though the Solaris Empire is now a distant memory. Its reign ended the day Sunfire Castle fell to an army of bandits, after which his soldiers, like much of the Solaris ex-military, were driven into mercenary work. Perhaps unequalled as a swordsman on horseback and formidable as a tactician and old-world infantry specialist, he led the empire's last Dawnguard squad and remains a popular commander, though his men are less hopeful than he is of seeing the Solaris banner fly again.
The day the castle fell is burned into his memory as the day he lost everything but a new purpose. The dying Captain of the Guard gave him his orders: the young Empress was still alive. Bringing her out meant threading a path through chaos, looting and bloodshed, and Gregory led her clear of the city with blood pouring from arrow wounds in his armour. As his men planned where to take her, he looked into her terrified eyes and found the strength to press on.
Their escape raised its own questions, not least how the household would manage without servants, squires and maids. Contrary to his appearance, Gregory is not a rough man, and those who know him speak of the tenderness beneath his stern face. He still treats the Empress as holding royal authority, acting by turns as uncle, advisor, butler and bodyguard, and insists on preserving the old ways of Solaris, courtly decorum and regal dress included, however impossible the Empire's restoration may seem.
