Lore
Seo-yoon has always believed in the transformative power of music, a rare commodity in the new icy world. She travels from settlement to settlement with the band of minstrels who accompany her, in echo of the touring musicians of the old world, and merriment, laughter and dance follow them into every community they visit. She strikes most people as a gentle, humble soul, and only those who know her well see the iron stubbornness behind her eyes, her skill as a close-quarters fighter, or the uses her drumsticks can be turned to.
Her fame owes much to a privileged upbringing in one of the wealthiest cities of the Tundra, a relative utopia beside regions overrun by cold and wind, where she studied music and choreography to her heart's content and showed exceptional promise as a girl. She can play nearly any instrument after a short practice session, and her drumming is the most legendary of her gifts, less a product of long practice than of a musical magnetism that turns her heart into a language every listener hears. Her father, a strict survivalist and a stern but kindly man, followed each practice session with rigorous combat training for an eventuality he hoped would never come.
It came in her late teens, when a large band of bandits raided the settlement. Caught by surprise, most of the defenders were massacred, her father among them, while others fled on foot into the icy wilderness. Refusing to yield, Seo-yoon took up her instruments and kept a rousing martial theme going all night with little sign of response, until dawn showed the survivors how many of them were still standing. She called for volunteers, and a ragtag counter-attack force fell on invaders drunk on the town's wine or asleep after their celebrations. Her people won back their home and gave her a hero's welcome, and she became a commander as well as a musician.
