Hero Shards
More actions
Hero Shards are items used to unlock new Heroes and promote owned heroes to higher star ratings in Whiteout Survival. Each hero has its own dedicated shard type.
Uses
- Unlocking heroes — collecting enough shards for a hero unlocks them
- Star promotion — extra shards raise an owned hero's star rating, increasing its skill values and stats (the level cap itself comes from the Furnace)
General Hero Shards
Not every shard belongs to a single hero. General Hero Shards come in three rarities — Rare, Epic and Mythic — and each is redeemed for a shard of a hero the Chief already owns, of the matching rarity. The Mythic one covers Legendary heroes, with two exceptions: Natalia and Jeronimo cannot be chosen.
How many shards
Unlocking a hero takes 10 shards. Each star is then won in six steps, and the table gives the cost of every step, the cost of the star, and the running total from an unlocked hero.
| Star | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Total | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ★ | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 10 | 20 |
| ★★ | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 15 | 40 | 60 |
| ★★★ | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 | 40 | 115 | 175 |
| ★★★★ | 40 | 40 | 40 | 40 | 40 | 100 | 300 | 475 |
| ★★★★★ | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 600 | 1,075 |
The fifth star alone costs 600 shards — more than the first four stars together. A fully promoted hero has taken 1,075 shards, counting the 10 that unlocked it.

The Hero Lucky Box
The Lucky Box of a Daily Deal hero pays shards of that hero, one to ten of them, or a Mythic General Hero Shard instead. It is heavily weighted to the smallest prize: 70% for a single shard, 10% for two, 5% for three and 3% for four. Beyond that the odds fall away — 1.6%, 1%, 0.6%, 0.5%, 0.2% and 0.1% for five to ten. The Mythic General Hero Shard comes up 8% of the time.
