Hero Skills are the special abilities and passive bonuses that each Hero possesses in Whiteout Survival. Upgrading hero skills by leveling up and promoting heroes is the primary way to increase the power of your city and army.
Overview
Every hero has a unique set of skills that provide bonuses in specific areas. These skills scale with the hero's star level and overall level. Choosing which heroes to invest in — and understanding what their skills do — is one of the most important strategic decisions in the game.
Exploration and Expedition
Every hero has two separate sets of skills — Exploration and Expedition — and each set is only active in the matching kind of combat.
- Exploration skills apply when heroes are sent on their own, with no troops — for example in Exploration chapters and the Arena. An Exploration team fields up to five heroes, and the heroes' own stats and skills decide the battle.
- Expedition skills apply when heroes lead troops into battle — city attacks and defense, rallies, garrisons, and hunting beasts and Polar Terrors. An Expedition team fields up to three heroes plus troops, and the skills mainly buff those troops (Lethality and troop Attack, Defense and Health).
Because the two sets are independent, a hero that excels at Exploration may be weaker at Expedition, and vice versa. Each hero's page lists its Exploration and Expedition skills in separate tables.
The two kinds of combat also count time differently, which is why skill descriptions speak of seconds in both. Expedition combat is turn-based — both sides play their skills within the same turn — and one turn counts as one second, so a skill that fires "every 2 seconds" fires every two turns. Exploration combat runs in real time and has no turns at all.
Skill Types
Active Skills
Some heroes have active combat skills that trigger during battle. These abilities fire automatically under certain conditions (e.g., at the start of combat, when troops fall below a health threshold) and can deal damage, buff allies, or debuff enemies.
Passive Skills
Most hero skills in Whiteout Survival are passive bonuses that apply continuously. These can be city-wide bonuses — a production building’s output, gathering speed, research or training speed — or combat bonuses that apply to the troops the hero leads.
Building Assignment Skills
Many heroes provide bonuses that only activate when assigned to a specific building. For example:
- A Construction hero assigned to a building slot provides Construction Speed to that building's jobs
- A Research hero assigned to the Research Lab reduces research time
- A Training hero assigned to a Camp building speeds up troop production
Expedition Skill Categories
The table below sorts the Expedition skills of every hero on this wiki — 167 skills across 67 heroes — by what they do. Exploration skills are not counted here: they follow their own logic, and each hero's page lists them separately. City-wide effects are far rarer than combat ones, and three of them belong to a single hero.

Skill Upgrades
Hero skills are upgraded by:
- Leveling the hero — Spending hero EXP to level up the hero unlocks and improves their skills
- Star Promotion — Spending Hero Shards to increase the hero's star level unlocks higher-tier skill levels and new abilities
- Skill Manuals — Mythic Skill Manuals directly upgrade a hero's Exploration and Expedition skills
Skill Manuals come in three rarities — Rare, Epic and Mythic — and in two kinds, Exploration and Expedition, which makes six in all. A manual only feeds the kind of skill it names.
Higher star levels provide dramatically better skill values — a 5-star hero is far more powerful than the same hero at 1 star.
