Research
Research is a core progression system in Whiteout Survival. By spending resources and time in the Research Center, players unlock and upgrade technologies that improve their city, military, and economy. Research is divided into three main trees: Battle, Growth, and Economy.
Research Trees
Battle Research
Battle research improves your military capabilities, including troop stats, combat skills, and advanced military technologies.
Tier 1 Battle Technologies:
- Lancer Armor I — Increases Lancer defense
- Marksman Armor I — Increases Marksman defense
- Lancer Upgrade I — Improves Lancer attack
- Targeted Sniping I — Increases Marksman precision
- Regimental Expansion I — Increases troop capacity
- Assault Techniques I — Improves attack strategies
- Survival Techniques I — Increases troop survivability
- Bulwark Formations I — Improves defensive formations
- Picket Lines I — Improves troop positioning
- Shield Upgrade I — Increases Infantry defense
- Defensive Formation I — Improves defensive tactics
- Skirmishing I — Increases skirmish effectiveness
- Precision Targeting I — Increases ranged accuracy
- Close Combat I — Improves melee combat
- Reprisal Tactics I — Improves counterattack effectiveness
- Special Defensive Training I — Unlocks advanced defensive capabilities
- Weapons I — Upgrades troop weapons
Research tiers go from Tier 1 through Tier 6 and beyond, with each tier requiring higher-level buildings and resources.
Growth Research
Growth research focuses on city development. These technologies speed up construction, research, training and healing, and expand your training, infirmary and march capacities.
Key growth technologies include:
- Construction speed improvements
- Building cost reductions
- City power upgrades
- Population capacity expansion
- Hero experience boosts
Economy Research
Economy research enhances resource production, gathering rates, and storage capacity. This tree is essential for sustaining your city's growth and military.
Key economy technologies include:
- Resource production boosts (Meat, Wood, Coal, Iron)
- Gathering speed improvements
- Storage capacity increases
- Troop training cost reductions
- Energy production enhancements
Advanced Research Trees
Beyond the standard three trees, the highest troop tiers are unlocked through dedicated War Academy research rather than the Research Center:
- T11 Infantry Research — Unlocks and improves Tier 11 Infantry
- T11 Marksman Research — Unlocks and improves Tier 11 Marksmen
- T11 Lancer Research — Unlocks and improves Tier 11 Lancers
- T12 Marksman Research — Unlocks and improves Tier 12 Marksmen
- T12 Infantry Research — Unlocks and improves Tier 12 Infantry
- T12 Lancer Research — Unlocks and improves Tier 12 Lancers
The Tier 11 line is known as Helios and the Tier 12 line as Exalted; each has a page of its own, with its technologies and their costs.
Research Center
Research is conducted in the Research Center building. A higher-level Research Center unlocks more advanced technologies and reduces research time. Its level is limited by the Furnace level.
Where to research first
Research shares a queue with nothing else and runs on timers that grow into days and then weeks, so only a fraction of the tree gets done in any given period. Deciding the order matters more than in almost any other system, because a technology left unresearched is simply absent until you come back to it.
Economy usually comes first. Its production and gathering boosts compound: faster resource output pays for every later research, building upgrade and troop batch, so an hour spent here shortens everything that follows. Growth is the natural second focus for players building up a city — its construction-speed and cost reductions stack with the same economy gains to raise the whole base faster. Battle research is what you prioritise before you expect to fight: a State vs State season, Bear Hunt, or defending against rallies. A balanced account cycles between the three, leaning economy early and battle as combat events approach.
The standard trees run from Tier 1 to Tier 6 and beyond in the Research Center, whose level — and therefore which technologies you can reach — is capped by the Furnace. The highest troop tiers are a separate track: T11 (Helios) and T12 (Exalted) are researched in the War Academy during the Fire Crystal Age, not the Research Center, and belong to the late game rather than this ordering.
