Lore
Sonya is the chief engineer of The Neptune, a submarine, where a few years aboard have made her a queen-like presence and her exceptional skills spare the rundown vessel its frequent breakdowns. She first boarded as a prisoner; when Captain Hendrik realized she could free herself with her skills and intelligence and that no one could stop her, he simply let her roam. The crew find her intimidating for her physical prowess and because she knows everyone's secrets and weaknesses, and how to exploit them.
Her hunger for wealth comes from her past. A distant relative of the old kingdom's royal family, she lived extravagantly until she lost everything the day Sunfire Castle fell, and years of homelessness and destitution stripped her of dignity. Mastering the law of survival in the icy world left her convinced that money is the sole path to redemption. The knowledge and combat skills she gained as a wanderer drew invitations from the Dawn Alliance, the mercenaries and even the Phaethon, all of whose pay she dismissed as meager.
She turned instead to the treasures of the world, and had already gathered clues to the Sunken Nation from ancient ruins before she ever met the crew. Needing Hendrik's expensive vessel to find the realm hidden underwater, she got herself captured on purpose; everyone aboard understands that the two are using each other and will turn on one another the moment their interests conflict. Sonya intends to become the wealthiest person in the tundra, rebuild the kingdom of Solaris, and crown herself its new queen.
